KIMBERLY COUTURE
Through the process of trying to build my book up I was working with various models on as many shoots as I could book. This one was particularly fun and I got an opportunity to try out some things I had been mulling over for some time.
The basic idea for the shoot was to create some soft but directional portraits with a little bit of a fashion skew to them. I wanted the pictures to almost look like natural light but a bit more controlled.
I have been dying to try out the huge 78" hensel umbrella for a while now and this was a perfect opportunity to do so. The quality of the light is really really soft, but specular and direct at the same time. So in order to add a bit more contrast to the picture I added a 22" speedotron beauty dish (on a separate light) inside the umbrella facing the model. The beauty dish was at about 2 or3 o'clock in the umbrella (at least for the initial set up). The head in the umbrella was set to about 1000ws and the beauty dish was set to around 600ws but since it was faced directly towards the model the two lights together metered about f/20. Shot on a Savage Fashion Gray seamless about 2.5-3 ft behind the model. Through the shoot I finessed the light a bit but it stayed pretty much the same the whole time.
